Ask Ed | Buying Construction Materials
A Monthly Public Works Column By Ed Duarte, Construction & Public Works Specialist
For public works construction projects, the specifications are very explicit as to what the engineer wants the contractor to furnish and install. So, when you receive a materials or equipment price quote from a vendor to include in your bid, always remember to do the following:
- Confirm they can meet a delivery schedule that complies with the contract completion date.
- Confirm they are quoting on the make and model that meets specifications!
- Be sure the sales tax and freight costs are included.
- Use a Purchase Agreement with language that obligates the vendor to comply with all aspects of the contract specifications. Never use a standard or simplistic Purchase Order.
