The Government Buys More Than You Think

After more than 30 years of selling to government agencies, one lesson has remained constant: the government buys nearly everything.

My experience began in the private sector, where I sold commodities across multiple levels of government. For nearly 10 years as a procurement specialist, I have also helped clients grow in the government marketplace and have seen agencies purchase an extraordinary range of products and services.

Across local, state, and federal government, businesses of all sizes help support the public-sector supply chain through:

  • Commodities and goods
  • Professional services
  • Manufacturing
  • Research and development
  • Expert consulting services

In short, the government marketplace creates opportunities across nearly every industry.

The Missed Opportunity for Local Businesses

Many local companies focus their sales efforts on private and commercial markets while leaving government out of their business plans. As a result, they miss a meaningful opportunity for revenue growth.

Over time, businesses may reach a sales plateau in these markets. When that happens, they can limit the number of clients they serve while overlooking the potential of selling their goods and services to government agencies.

Even when businesses know government opportunities exist, many dismiss the market because it can feel difficult to navigate. Registration systems, contracting language, and uncertainty about where to begin often prevent companies from taking the first step.

I faced similar challenges when I began my career more than 30 years ago. What helped then—and remains essential today—are the same qualities we encourage in our clients: patience, persistence, and the ability to perform.

The difference today is that businesses have more resources available to help them understand the process, become contract-ready, and pursue opportunities as government contractors in support of the Government Industrial Base/Defense Industrial Base (GIB/DIB).

A Practical Path to Success

Businesses can succeed in the government marketplace when they bring the right combination of capability, discipline, and follow-through. A viable product or service, emerging technology, patience, persistence, and the ability to perform all matter.

Client success stories demonstrate what is possible when businesses commit to the process, use available resources, and continue executing consistently. There is a proven path forward:

  • Learn how the government marketplace works.
  • Become contract-ready before pursuing opportunities.
  • Use guidance, training, and support to build confidence.
  • Apply patience, persistence, and performance consistently.

Opportunity and Economic Impact

The government marketplace offers meaningful growth opportunities for businesses and provides resources to help them succeed. At the same time, agencies need capable companies to strengthen the GIB/DIB and meet mission requirements.

These opportunities exist across local, state, and federal agencies, regardless of a company’s geographic service area. Because government operates everywhere, businesses that engage in this market can expand their customer base while contributing to local economic growth.
